What a Friend We Have In Jesus
Sometimes the words of this song really strike a chord with me. There are times when I feel exceedingly weak. When I am burdened and I don’t think I can bear anymore. I have life verses and a favorite verse. They are not the same. My life verses instruct me in how to move past my burdens.
Matthew 11 : 28 – 30 (KJV)
28 Come unto me, all [ye] that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. 30 For my yoke [is] easy, and my burden is light.
He offers me peace and solace. But before I can get to that place of rest, I have to give up whatever it is I am holding on to. I have to share it with Him. He’ll carry it for me on His broad shoulders, but if I am clutching it to my chest refusing to let it go, He won’t forcibly pry it from my grip. I have to be willing to give it to Him. To trust Him with it.
Sometimes life is difficult. Health issues overwhelm us. Friends forsake us. Even family will hurt us. At those times are we seeking Jesus? What about when life is good? Are we seeking Him then? If we would trust Him with every aspect of our lives and turn to Him before every decision we make, we would realize that we are never alone. He is with us. Even in what feels like our darkest moments, He carries us through. He shut the mouth of the lions for Daniel. He gave David the aim needed to slay Goliath. And He hung on a cross for me. And for you.
Once, we have given Him our cares, then we are free to focus on what really matters. That is when I turn to my favorite verse which instructs me as to where my focus belongs and what I was created for in the first place.
Revelation 4 : 11 (KJV)
Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.
He is more than worthy of my love and devotion. On Him will I bestow all glory and honour, praise and worship. Whatever else is going on in my life, it cannot be as important as time spent in worship of the One who gave Himself for me. Jesus is a true friend and I will make time for Him today. Will you?
