What was the most surprising or fascinating piece of research you uncovered while developing the historical or cultural details necessary for the book?
When I was writing Allure of Elegance, I researched the actual transaction amounts of Birkin bags in various real-life situations and strove to reflect reality as much as possible in the book. Still, my critique partners questioned the believability of the high price tags for what, on the surface, appears to be a simple leather handbag with an iconic name behind it.
A recent (7/2025) news shocked the world: “Jane Birkin’s original Hermès bag sells for over $10 million at auction” (click this link to read the whole article)
With this recent auction, it feels like the market has validated every fictional twist and turn I devised about the shadowy dealings around luxury purses and the extraordinary sums involved.
Life has a way of outdoing fiction, doesn’t it? The auction of Jane Birkin’s original Hermès Birkin bag for over $10 million is a true testament to the astonishing world of high-end luxury goods, proving once and for all that when it comes to ultra-rare collectibles, “unreal” is just another word for “possible.”
The allure of the Birkin extends far beyond functionality (which, with its limited runs and multi-year waiting lists, it barely serves anyway). Instead, luxury items like these operate as tangible symbols of exclusivity and cultural cachet. Like rare art, they become investment pieces—with their value rising steeply just for being associated with the likes of Jane Birkin, Grace Kelly, or other style icons. For collectors and enthusiasts, a $10 million winning bid isn’t simply a transaction. It’s a claim to a slice of cultural history and an entry into an inner sanctum.
If you’ve ever received a skeptical eyebrow when discussing the cost of luxury goods, you’re hardly alone. Many people, including my friends and readers, struggle to fathom why such objects fetch stratospheric prices. But as this sale proves, the market is as much about narrative and identity as it is about materials and craft. The Birkin’s aura is strong enough to justify the kind of drama that draws mystery writers like myself deep into fictional tales of desire, rivalry, and suspense.
So, if Allure of Elegance seems to spin a fantastical web around the Birkin and its rarified world, please remember that truth is often stranger than fiction.
Have thoughts about luxury collectibles? I’d love to hear from you.
Without giving away too many secrets, can you share any tantalizing hints about the themes or world readers can expect in your next book?
My next book, Zen of Tea (to be released in March 2026), is a novella in the series entitled An Apron Strings Tea Tale.
Last year (2024), I received an unexpected message from Amy Walsh, asking whether I would like to be part of a multiauthor project. The series takes place in the 1920s and 1930s, and each novella must mention a tea shop, Mrs. Canfield’s Cookery Book (published in 1916), and a fairy tale from the works of Hans Christian Andersen. I hesitated and prayed about it. Could I meet the deadline? What should I write about?
Yet as I pondered, the fragments of an idea took shape. I was drawn to the notion of a young woman—her past a mystery, a telltale birthmark casting a shadow over her sense of worth—forging her way in a hostile world. The themes suggested by the series all came together: tea as a symbol of hospitality and entrepreneurship, Mrs. Canfield’s Cookery Book as a tether to both tradition and reinvention, and Hans Christian Andersen’s The Nightingale, a fairy tale about longing, beauty, and grace.
Bolstered by this vision, I said yes. As I wrote, I learned a lot about the Chinese Exclusion Act in the US and Canada and about how courageous souls dared to believe in a kinder, more loving future. I hope you’ll join me, and the rest of the Apron Strings Tea Tales authors, for an enchanting journey through history, heartache, and faith.
What research did you undertake to understand the specific social dynamics that drive the characters’ need for elegance, and how did you filter that through a Christian worldview?
As a PhD biochemist, meticulous research is second nature to me, whether I’m working on a scientific book or integrating creative concepts into a fictional narrative. Before beginning a book, I spend a considerable amount of time delving into relevant literature, both scientific and creative, to ensure a well-rounded understanding. The length of the research phase varies depending on the complexity of the topic, but it often spans several weeks. I also enjoy speaking with friends in different fields, which can offer new perspectives and enrich my work. I suppose my thorough research paid off with Allure of Elegance.
Amazon reviews state:
Quote 1: “This book surprised me in all the best ways.”
Quote 2: “The whole underground Birkin bag operation fascinated me. I’ve never read a mystery that touched on high-end fashion crime in such detail.”
Quote 3: “The author did a good job with the characters, setting, and the writing itself. She has a unique perspective of the sincere Christianity that she brings to each novel, along with characters who have interesting lives and have lived in interesting places.”

Luxury, lies, and danger in the unexpected places…
In tribute to Agatha Christie, this modern mystery series weaves together atypical tales set in the idyllic Amish country of Paradise, PA.
Two years ago, still haunted by the tragic events of September 11, Tina Sheng reluctantly served as a Christian summer camp counselor in Paradise. Now, she works as an insurance fraud investigator in nearby Lancaster and is pulled into a web of lies and luxury when a bold theft targets expensive designer items. Despite her training, she struggles with self-doubt and is swayed by the allure of the opulent world.
Tina’s company assigns her to look into the insurance claim. While she navigates the treacherous path between justice and desire, temptations taunt her. After a tragedy strikes a friend with whom she tries to share the gospel, her intensified search traps her in a secret network involving the mysterious Baroness Hermès, who specializes in procuring Birkin bags for wealthy clients.
Facing tough choices, can Tina break into a dangerous underground operation and emerge as a beacon of resilience?

Two eras, one stormy sea. Two women navigate love and heritage across centuries. Book 1 in this dual-time odyssey series braids together a mesmerizing tale about loyalty, redemption, and transformation.
Debra Gong, a PhD student in biochemistry, eagerly counts down to her upcoming 2020 wedding in Chicago. The unexpected death of her father, a famous writer, brings her back to Hong Kong.
